This shows the cost of doing the initial instrument rating without use of a sim and the cost of doing it with the sim. Fuel is calculated on a fuel burn of 8½ gph, which is typical for most trainer type aircraft. Use of the sim makes a significant difference in obtaining the instrument rating.

Obviously this comparison would have variables that are beyond our control, such as cost of aircraft rental, cost of fuel, and the cost of instruction. However the bottom line is that the sim will save the instrument student a significant amount of money.
