Will Outlaw can't remember a time when he didn't want to fly. He soloed at age 16, and was always proud to say he could legally fly an airplane by himself before he could drive a car by himself. Paying for college collided with flying lessons, and it was ten years before he soloed again and earned his private certificate, flying out of Martin Field, a small grass strip in Ohio that closed years ago. He began to fly consistently when he joined a flying club at Crystal Airport (KMIC). Finally in 2006 he decided he wanted to teach flying full time and earned his instrument, commercial, CFI and CFII certificates in short order. In a nice bit of symmetry, he passed his CFI checkride 23 years to the day after his first solo flight. As of January 2007 he has about 500 hours total time. He is currently teaching about 10 hours a week, with several primary and instrument students. Will's favorite flying experience is all the trips he has taken in small airplanes. He has flown to Maine, Washington D.C., to Mississippi, Atlanta, Milwaukee and New York in single-engine airplanes. He feels that all his real world experience has helped him as an instructor as well. Will is a big proponent of using simulators as much as possible during training, primarily because they are an excellent learning environment. He really likes the Garmin 430 in the elite sim and is able to raise the understanding of his students of how the unit works and to use it their best advantage in IFR flying. Will's favorite fantasy airplane is the X-Wing Fighter from the Star Wars movies. On a less galactic scale, the TBM-550 would be his perfect fantasy airplane. His favorite real-world airplane is the Cirrus SR-22, but he said he is also a sucker for an old Cessna 172.
